Since 2012, Stand up for Labour has been organising gigs in community halls, pubs and theatres throughout England, Scotland and Wales.
Numbering over 200 in total these events have raised vital funds for CLPs, boosted morale during difficult times and consistently promoted party unity. In an atmosphere of fun and camaraderie, members are encouraged to focus on winning. Originally comprising comedy and speeches, the gigs have evolved into Variety Shows with music, film and poetry.
Arthur Smith is a comedian and compere beyond compare, playwright, panelist and performer of international stature. Arthur was an instant hit in Grumpy Old Men of which he did three series. He is also an accomplished playwright, his plays include 'An Evening with Gary Lineker' which was nominated for an Olivier Award and made into a TV film, 'My Summer with Des' and 'The Live Bed Show' which had a run in the West End, starring Caroline Quentin and Paul Merton.
He is a stalwart of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival with many of his productions transferring to London's West End. In 2005 Arthur turned down a Perrier Award for Lifetime Achievement stating 'They wanted to tell me I was old and cool; well, I know that already and anyway, my ego is bloated enough'. He remains a regular guest on LOOSE ENDS and PICK OF THE WEEK and did 3 series of ARTHUR'S BALHAM BASH for R4. As a comedian he has played all over the country, including the Comedy Store, Jongleurs, and assorted West End theatres. More recently he can be found appearing on BBC1's THE ONE SHOW, reporting on a huge range of subjects, from Darts to Flotsam and Jetsom in Holland and he can be heard nightly on RADIO 4 XTRA's COMEDY CLUB. In 2014, he dusted down his vocal chords and revisited his old friend Leonard Cohen with a huge sell out show ARTHUR SMITH SINGS LEONARD COHEN (VOL 2) at the Soho Theatre.
Launched into public consciousness by legendary Radio One DJ John Peel in 1982/83, he has spent 35 years touring the world as a self sustaining DIY one man cottage industry, performing well over 3000 gigs in 24 countries and releasing 40 LPs/EPs/CDs and 7 books of poetry.
He toured East Germany 4 times before the Wall came down and twice more immediately afterwards, was involved in the first ever punk performance in Stalinist Albania and had to turn down playing in North Korea because he was already booked to tour sensible old Canada. He once stood in for Donny Osmond at a gig. He was targeted by fascists during the early Eighties and as well as the physical stuff once had a 10 minute stand up political argument with notorious Nazi band Skrewdriver singer Ian Stuart in the middle of a Black Flag gig at the 100 Club in London's Oxford Street.
Having got an encore as the support act, he was thrown out of his own gig by the bouncers on the orders of the main act John Cale, one of his all time musical heroes. His support acts - they've included Manic Street Preachers, Julian Clary, New Model Army and Billy Bragg.
Infinitease Finalist, Lolly Jones (Black Mirror/Charlie Brooker's Weekly Wipe) will perform Theresa May Cabaret; a burlesque act. Focusing on her leadership bid, Brexit Negotiations and her infamous conference speech, the Prime Minister will be seen in a new light.
Mark Carter has played in Bournemouth bands, The Spoons, Walking Spanish, Plastic Paddy and Cash Converted. The 'singing trade unionist' will be performing a high energy mix of political folk and cockney kness up originals.
A former runner up in the Hackney Empire New Acts competition, who set up Stand up for Labour in 2012 and has now organised over 200 gigs in England, Scotland and Wales.
We have some very special guests attending, the Reducetarian Society, who won the first Society of the Month award at Bournemouth University. They will be talking through their links with Labour's new Animal Welfare Plan at the start of the event and in the breaks.
They will also collecting non-perishable food for distribution to St Pauls Direct Access Hostel. If you can bring anything at all, please give it to Hakay on your way in.
What self respecting comedy, poetry, music and political evening would be complete without an auction and a raffle? Below is a lost of all that's on offer.

In September of last year the Concorde in Brigton hosted a Concerts for Corbyn event featuring acts including Stone Foundation, The Farm and John Power.
This poster from the night is not only signed by the acts that played but the modfather himself, Paul Weller. It would make a fine addition to any wall.
