Fri 23rd February John Denham

English Identity and the English Labour Network

Bournemouth & District Fabian Society invites you to listen to their guest speaker. A discussion led by Professor Rt. Hon. John Denham PC

Labour's totally unexpected gains in the General Election on 8 June 2017 have put the Party in a great position to take the next step, into Government. To do this Labour needs to win in England. The English Labour Network will face outwards, supporting activists at every level of the Party and in every part of England to make Labour's case. We'll support Labour in power in local authorities, share campaigns that promote Labour's values, and help shape an appeal to English voters that is both patriotic and progressive.

John will lead a discussion on the English Labour Network, as well as questions of English Identity, and why Labour's support is weaker amongst those voters who identify more strongly as English than British.

John was the Labour MP for Southampton Itchen from 1992 until standing down at the 2015 General Election. Before entering Parliament he worked for a variety of voluntary sector advocacy groups including Friends of the Earth, the British Youth Council and War on Want. He took a leading role in establishing both the UK and European campaigns for Third World Debt Relief. He was also a Hampshire County and Southampton City Councillor.

He served as a Minister in the last Labour Government for 10 years, including periods as a junior minister and Minister of State at the Social Security (Pensions), Health and Home Office before resigning over the Iraq War. He returned to government, under PM Gordon Brown,as Secretary of State for Innovation, Universities and Skills, and then Communities and Local Government. He was Chair of the House of Commons Home Affairs Select Committee from 2003-2007.
